How do you configure a controller for use with a new robot?

The Guidance Controllers offer many high-level and low-level motion control features and have been designed to address a wide range of applications and functional requirements.  Consequently, to apply a controller to a new robot, parameters must be defined to specify the appropriate kinematic module to be utilized, axis stop limits, motor current and PID loop tuning parameters, motor and encoder characteristics, etc.

If you are not familiar with these controllers and wish to integrate them to a new robot, we highly recommend that you obtain a day or two of training and support from Precise or your distributor.

However, should you wish to teach yourself how to configure a controller for use with a new robot, we recommend the following.

  1. Obtain a copy of the Guidance Develop Suite (GDS) and install it on your PC.  This package contains the Guidance Configuration Utility (GCU).  The GCU contains wizards that lead you through many of the controller configuration procedures step-by-step.
  2. Read the Guidance Controller Setup and Operation Quick Start Guide or the equivalent section in the PreciseFlex Library.  This will provide information on connecting the controller to a PC, using the web interface and basic robot system operation.  Until you are able to move the robot, some of the instructions in the Guide cannot be performed, but they will give you a sense for how the system operates.
  3. Read the Controller Software, Software Setup chapter in the PreciseFlex Library.  In particular, read the first section that gives an overview of the database and files that store the configuration data.  The second section is a series of check lists that detail the configuration process and the third section provides in depth descriptions of some items such as kinematic models, absolute encoders and homing methods.  The second and third sections should be skimmed so you are aware of the additional resources and special instructions available.
  4. Launch the Guidance Configuration Utility (GCU).   Execute the wizards in the order they are listed to perform the steps necessary to configure a typical system.  At times, you may wish to refer to the detailed information contained in the Software Setup chapter.  Each wizard can be executed individually if you wish to later go back and touch up some values.   Configuration of some special features may have to be done using the information provided in the Software Setup chapter.

After you complete the configuration of your controller, we suggest that you browse the Controller Software, Introduction to the Software chapter of the PreciseFlex Library for more general information on the Guidance Controllers.
